Character Design
When we were coming up with the design for this book, we felt it was really important for a young reader to feel at home with the visual style. The characters we ended up with were made from simple shapes, enriched with beautiful, real textures of paper and ink and marker.
World Build
In an illustration and in life, the objects around us can often reflect who we are, or what we are feeling. Considering this, the many ‘things’ around Mindy needed to take advantage of that storytelling opportunity and help to reveal more of her personality and the way the world feels to her.
Early in the design phase, we decided that using negative space on a page would be a clever way to guide the eye where we wanted it, this also became an efficient way to craft a world given the limited amount of time we had.
Each page explores the focus of this young person’s thoughts and feelings.
